SPEC Training Infographic for Dog Walkers

Inspiration for this project was provided by GoDesignSomething.com: Project ideas for instructional designers.

The Client:

The local animal shelter was looking to onboard new volunteer dog walkers. For this project we selected Butte Humane Society as our “local” shelter.

The Challenge:

One issue that has come up repeatedly with volunteers in the need to reinforce good behavior for dogs on each walk to better prepare them for adoption.

The Project:

This project was to develop a training job aid to be included in a dog behavior facilitator and volunteer handbook to help volunteer dog walkers learn to reinforce good behavior when approaching a kennel for a walk. The target audience is new dog walkers of various ages, but no younger than 16 years of age. All walkers are physically fit enough for exercise and to handle all dog breeds.

The Production Materials:

We chose to approach this project by producing a tri-fold brochure to deliver information and serve as a job aid. The training materials were created in Canva using templates and stock photos. Source material for the project was gleaned from the Humane Society: Dog Walking Manual and YouTube videos Removing a Dog from the Kennel Parts 1 and 2.

SPEC Email Onboarding Series

Inspiration for this project was provided by GoDesignSomething.com: Project ideas for instructional designers.

The Client:

This project was designed with Verbosity Creative Solutions in mind. Our organization is hypothetically hiring a couple of junior eLearning professionals. As part of an initiative to make our team’s onboarding of new teammates easier and faster, we designed a brief email onboarding series for the new hires to acclimate them to their new roles.

The Challenge:

The project is to develop a series of emails to help onboard a new hire to an eLearning Specialist Role. Recommended topics included meeting with HR professionals to talk about benefits and pay, meeting the team, tools we use, and reviews of previous work. The target audience is new hires who are specific to the eLearning Specialist Role.

The Project:

Deliverables for this project included mockups of the email designs and an onboarding series topic plan with a schedule for the campaign. The overall series plan was based on an onboarding checklist that was provided online. The checklist included topics for preboarding, first day induction, week one role-specific onboarding, and month one progress reporting.

The Production Materials:

This project was created in Canva using email templates and stock photos. The planning materials for the project were created in Microsoft Office.

This project was originally produced as a nine-week thematic unit for High School Seniors during COVID-19. The project presented here has the same content but has so many significant additions that we feel it best to classify it as a “speculative” project now.

Into the Wild -SPEC Project

The Client:

This project was produced for and in conjunction with the Orland High School English Department. The school serves approximately 760 students with approximately 35 faculty members. The school is 65% Hispanic with a large English Language Learner population. Additionally, the school and district at large serve a 70% economically disadvantaged population.

The Challenge:

The original project was produced for distribution in 70-minute segments over nine weeks. All materials were embedded in the slides.

The “speculative” portion of this project supposes that this might be a “training” for young adults who are college or career planning and given as a number of workshops, or as some form of hybrid workshop-eLearning combination.

Regardless, the challenge was to create materials that incorporate direct instruction as well as self-directed components to reinforce skill-building. The intent of this portfolio piece is to showcase our print materials.

The Project:

This project is comprised of a master slide deck that contains all workshop resources and materials. In addition, it includes a trainer workbook that specifies what resources go with each activity and a participant workbook for print resources.

The Production Materials:

This project was produced using Google Apps for Education and was later converted to the Microsoft Office Suite. Slide deck resources utilized assets from SlidesCarnival and Unsplash and contain media elements from YouTube, Google Forms, and TeacherChannel. Additional media in the form of documentaries are recommended as ancillary materials. Participant and Trainer manuals were created in the Microsoft Office Suite using assets from Unsplash.
